The Malta International Arts Festival 2019

26 June 2019 | Gattaldo

Malta - The Malta International Arts Festival is one of Malta’s most appreciated events with music, theatre, visual arts, dance, opera, installations, films, community projects, interactive and participatory events. Here's what not to miss.

Toujours et Près de Moi?

Clever use of holography in a music-theatre performance by Opera Erratica from the UK set entirely to music with a mixture of Renaissance madrigals and contemporary vocal music. The show puts a modern twist on the Victorian stage effect called Pepper's ghost, an illusion in which a piece of glass is suspended at an angle at the front of the stage to throw an image from below back on to the stage. The holographic figures represent the performers' younger selves in a doomed love-affair.

Zonzo Campagnie introduces music to children in a most creative way to entertain children and adults alike. After experimenting with John Cage and Miles Davis, it's now time to witness the music of the Italian composer Luciano Berio. In BerBerio you'll witness a sung comic strip, you'll hear what happens when music from different composers disappear in the mixer, and you'll be introduced to Berio's charming folk songs.

FLA.CO.MEN

Israel Galván’s wild flamenco reinvention has mesmerised audiences around the world. Complicated feet movements, rapid-fire footwork punctuated by moments of stillness and silence. He questions flamenco and turns it on its head. Not to be missed.

Aquasonic

An eerily stunning underwater concert from a Denmark band using custom-made instruments submerged in water tanks. Through their music they hope to draw people closer to nature by reminding them of their affinity with water. To me their music could very well be the mermaids' enticing call and I'll need to summon all of my self control to not dive into the water tanks myself.
